Ryan Van Spronsen - December 6, 2007
Ryan Van Spronsen is an eighteen-year-old graduate of Assumption College who participated in several sports including baseball, badminton, cross-country and volleyball.
He was a member of the Assumption senior boys volleyball team for 2 years; he participated in cross-county in grade 11 and played baseball in grades 11 and 12. He was involved in badminton in grades 11 and 12 winning the Brant County Men’s Singles Championship both years, he was the CWOSSA Badminton Champion, he placed 5 th at OFSAA and won MVP both years.
Ryan has been an active member of the Brantford Junior Badminton Club since 2003, and won the Western Ontario Badminton Association Triple Crown championships (singles, doubles and mixed doubles). He reached the Provincial semi-finals in mixed doubles and in 2006 participated in the finals for mixed doubles, ranking 4 th in Ontario. He qualified and played in the National Championships in Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal in 2004 to 2006, and played on the Western Ontario’s Regional All-star team in the 2006 Ontario Winter Games.
Ryan excels in the sport of baseball has been involved since he was 4 years old. He currently plays for the Canadian Thunderbirds 18 and under elite team from Hamilton.
This season his team had a 22 game winning streak and won 3 straight International tournaments including a 30-team tournament in Dayton Ohio. During that tournament Ryan pitched a complete-game shutout to start the tournament, and a complete game in the Championships allowing only 2 runs over 14 innings. He also played on a regional all-star team in the 2004 Ontario Summer Games.
Ryan graduated from high school with an Ontario Scholar Award and recently accepted a baseball scholarship to pitch for Wagner College, a division 1 college in Staten Island, New York. During the next 4 years he plans to study business concentrating in finance.
