Ryan Murchie - July 22, 2004
This week's TCO "Athlete of the Week" is Ryan Murchie, an 18-year-old recent graduate (with a 97.6 per cent average) of North Park Collegiate (NPC), an outstanding athlete, scholar, leader, and community contributor. Ryan has an outstanding, diversified athletic and academic resume. In this past year alone, he captained both the NPC senior football and rugby teams, was a member of the Briers basketball team and the NPC senior basketball team. He won the graduating athletic award at North Park Collegiate and was the senior football team's most valuable player on defence for the past season.
Winner of the Bisons' Alumni Academic-Athletic Scholarship, Ryan has always found a balance between athletics and academics. He has been a team member of the NPC basketball, rugby and football team, and played for the Brantford Bisons' football team and the Briers' basketball team, many times as captain or assistant-captain.
The NPC basketball teams to which Ryan has belonged have qualified for CWOSSA each of the past three years, and the junior rugby team which he captained, won a CWOSSA gold. Ryan's coaches praise his discipline and leadership abilities.
Ryan has worked as a referee for the youth soccer league, a scorekeeper for the Brier Basketball Association, and has acted as junior director for the Brantford Summer Basketball Camp for the past two years.
This outstanding young man has been recognized by the Canadian Merit Foundation as one of Canada's top 50 graduating students, and also by the Toronto Raptors as the top high school contributor to Ontario basketball.
Ryan is a top contributor to the community: he was vice-president of the NPC student council, treasurer for its Rotary Interact Club, a Unicef campaign organizer, a member of the United Nations Club, a tutor for learning-challenged children, coordinator of the Walk Against Male Violence, a Nova Vita fundraiser, and a peer tutor.
Ryan will be attending Queen's University in the fall in the honours science program in preparation for a possible career in medicine. After excellent placing in numerous regional and provincial science competitions, Ryan is well on his way to an outstanding future as an influential community contributor.
