Nathan Black - August 26, 2004
TCO Athlete of the Week Nathan Black is a recent graduate of Pauline Johnson CVS. During his years as a student at PJ Nathan made his mark as an outstanding rugby player. He was a co-captain of both the Junior and Senior boys rugby teams, and was named Most Valuable Player in 2003 (Junior) and 2004 (Senior). This summer he continued his participation in the sport, playing for the Brantford Harlequins 18 and under team.
Nathan's participation in athletics is not limited to rugby. He played Ultimate Frisbee Football for three years, played basketball for the Brantford Briers and the PJ Thunderbirds, was active in lacrosse for four years, wrestling for two years, and played one season of soccer. At his graduation ceremony his spirit, skill and sportsmanship were recognized when he was presented with the Alan Savage Memorial Award. His list of awards also includes a Bison's Alumni Scholarship, co-winner of the PJ Phys Ed Award, a bronze medal in wrestling (1997) and his Senior Letter (2003).
While he displays great prowess as an athlete, Nathan's successes off the field reveal that he is truly a well-rounded individual. He has participated in his school's Student Council, was a Home Room representative for three years, and was a 'Fitnic Day' captain for three years. Nathan also volunteered to become a PJ School Ambassador. In this role he visited elementary school classrooms, informing Grade Eight students about high school academics and extra-curricular opportunities. He took part in fundraisers including the 30 Hour Famine and Hoops for Heart, and has helped with clean-ups of the Mohawk Canal and D'Aubigny Creek.
Academically, Nathan has achieved Honour Role standing every year of his secondary studies. He graduated with an 88% overall average, and is particularly proud of his highest mark in high school, a 99%, earned during a co-op placement as a Physical Education teacher. This fall Nathan begins his post-secondary studies at Brock University. He plans to study Physical Education and History, and hopes to become a secondary school teacher. He would like to get involved with the rugby program at Brock, and in the future aspires to coach high school rugby and football.
Congratulations Kevin, and good luck! |
