Athlete of the Week - 2009


    Mike Bulman - July 9, 2009

    Mike Bulman is an eighteen-year-old graduate of North Park Collegiate who has been actively involved in track and field, swimming, soccer and cross-country for several years. He was a member of the NPC track and field and soccer teams in grades 9, 10, 11, and 12; he was a member of the NPC cross country team in 10, 11, and 12 and a member of his school’s swim team in 11 and 12. Mike played BICS soccer for 4 seasons and received the Most Improved Player in 2005. He also competed for the Brantford Aquatic Club at a few novice meets when he was younger.

    Mike has received numerous individual and team awards including the 2009 Graduating Male Athlete of the Year award at the Athletic Banquet in June. He won the 2009 Most Valuable Male Track & Field Athlete; he won gold medals in the 400m and 4x400m relay at the Brant County meet and was 1st in the 400m hurdles breaking the County record and setting a new school record. He was 2nd in the 200m and 4x100m relay, he placed 3rd in the 800m race and tied for the Overall Senior Boy at the meet. He was 1st at OFSAA West Regionals in the 400m, breaking the old school record set by Kevin Sullivan; the new record is 50.41. He went on to compete at a provincial level at OFSAA placing 11th in the 400m.

    In 2008 Mike received the Most Valuable Male Track & Field Athlete award, he won gold in the 400m hurdles, he finished 2nd in the 800m at the Brant County meet and was 2nd in 400m hurdles at CWOSSA.

    He was the 2008/09 Most Valuable Male swimmer placing 1st in 200m medley relay and 100m breaststroke at the District 10 Championships. He finished 2nd in 100m IM, and 3rd in100m freestyle. He won gold at CWOSSA for 200m freestyle relay, he was 2nd in 200m medley relay and was 3rd in the 100m freestyle and the 100m IM. He had three top 20 finishes at OFSAA on the relay teams.
    Mike was an active member of the North Park Wind Ensemble playing trumpet for four years as well as the Stage Band and Brass Ensemble. He played "The Last Post" at the school’s Remembrance Day assembly for the last two years and fulfilled his 40 hours of community service by helping coach young soccer players and volunteering at a variety of other events. He is currently a lifeguard at the Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre.

    This summer Mike hopes to compete in one major athletic event either a marathon or triathlon. In the fall he will continue his education at the University of Western Ontario taking kinesiology and hopes to pursue a career as a physiotherapist, personal trainer or
    coach. He also hopes to make the varsity track team.

    Mike would like to thank Chris Haase and Ian Blott, two dedicated teachers at North Park who have coached him in various sports over the past four years and have been a positive influence on his athletic career. He would also like to recognize Scott Hewson for volunteering his time to coach and train track and field athletes at North Park.
