Katarina Selinger - August 27, 2009
Katarina (Kat) Selinger is a fourteen-year-old student from Paris District High School who will be entering grade 10 in September and has been actively involved in hockey for 7 years, baseball for the past 4 years at the rep level and was recently signed by the Hamilton Hawks Junior AA hockey team as defense for the 2009/2010 season, she is the youngest player on the team.
Kat has been captain of numerous hockey teams over the years including the Brantford Rolling Thunder inline hockey team; the Atom Brantford Ice Cats hockey team that won five gold medals at tournaments and a gold medal at the Provincials; the Hamilton Hawks Peewee A that won two silver medals and a gold medal in a Hamilton tournament and the Ancaster Avalanche Peewee AA hockey team. She played for the Paris Panthers high school hockey team that won first place in the County high school hockey league.
She was captain of volleyball, basketball, soccer and baseball teams and has also received numerous player of the game awards.
This summer Kat will be working as a trainer for the Strictly Hockey School that is run by Olympic Champions Cheryl Pounder and Becky Kellar. In the fall she has been invited to practice with the Burlington Barracuda’s Canadian Women’s Hockey team.
During the 2008/2009 season Kat was catcher and outfielder for the Brantford Bob Cats Fast pitch team. In 2008 they went undefeated through the Provincial Qualifiers and won gold in the championship game; placed second at the Eastern Canadian Championships in PEI. In 2009 they won bronze in the Provincial Championships.
In July the Bobcats won gold at the Mississauga Partners tournament earning them a berth to the USSSA World Series that was held in Orlando Florida; they finished in 1st place at the 2009 SGS Toledo Tune-up Midwest College Showcase tournament giving them another berth in 2010 to the USSSA World Series. Kat received a MVP award.
Kat has volunteered at the National Peewee Girls Fast Pitch Championships and the National Midget Boys Fast Pitch Championships held here in Brantford and mentored the Brantford Minor Squirts Baseball this year.
In grade 8 she was President of the Student Council, she was the Valedictorian for her graduating class, she received the Female Athlete of the Year award, and every year since grade 4 she has won 1st place for her Public Speaking.
Kat is hoping to attend University on a hockey scholarship and pursue a career in kinesiology. She has been invited to the tryouts this summer for the Under 18 National Hockey Team. In the future her aspirations are to play hockey with the Women’s National and Olympic hockey team.
