Heather Sangster - July 31, 2003
The Tournament Capital of Ontario "Athlete of the Week" is Heather Sangster, an eighteen-year-old North Park Collegiate graduate who will be attending McMaster University in the fall to pursue a Bachelor of Health Sciences.
Heather's passion is curling. She has been a member of the Brant Curling Club for nine years, starting out in the Little Rock program. She has progressed steadily and has been curling competitively for five years, curling in 11 zone championships.
To perfect her game, Heather has attended curling camp for four years. She was a member of the North Park Collegiate girls' team for her five years in high school, holding the skip position for four years. In 2003, together as a team, they achieved great heights in girls' curling: Brant County champions, CWOSSA silver medalists, and competitors at Gore Mutual School girls' provincial competition. As an individual competitor, Heather received the Academic Athletic award at the provincial competition for the highest average of all female participants.
In 2002, Heather helped her team become Brant County champions, CWOSSA champions and Friendship Round champions at OFSSA. She was vice with the Brant Curling Club on two junior teams. She also helped coach and instruct the Bantam house league at the curing club.
Heather was on the executive of the Girls' Athletic Society for three years and helped organize fundraisers and annual recognition ceremonies for various sports teams at North Park. This outstanding athlete was also a member of the North Park Wind Ensemble where she played the clarinet.
Heather has also received recognition for her academic and athletic achievements: she was the North Park Collegiate female recipient of the Bisons Alumni Academic Athletic Scholarship; she received the Dr. James Hillier Foundation Scholarship and the McMaster President's Award.
