Gillian Donkers - September 4, 2003
The Tournament Capital of Ontario "Athlete of the Week" is Gillian Donkers, a 19-year-old Assumption College graduate attending Wilfred Laurier University for Kinesiology and Physical Education. She received an entrance scholarship from the Kiwanis Club of Grand River, the Stedman's bursary. This is no surprise considering she was awarded the academic trophy every year in high school and several subject awards.
Upon completing her OAC-year, Gillian received the Hector Perras & Sons Ltd. award for highest standing in physical education. Being both an accomplished athlete and student, she also received the Bisons Alumni Athletic Scholarship award for her outstanding achievements.
Gillian has been involved in sports from a young age at her elementary school, St. Anthony Daniel, and at high school. Some of the sports she played include volleyball, track and field, tennis and badminton. She also carried her passion for sports over to her part time job, as she was a lifeguard at the Wayne Gretzky Centre during high school. Gillian worked hard and received her bronze medallion, bronze cross, National Lifeguard certification and is recognized as a Red Cross instructor.
While she was at Assumption College, she played rugby for the school team.
The last two years have also seen her play for the Brantford Lady Harlequins.
This summer Gillian represented the under 19 NRU Women's Team. She is currently trying out for Laurier University's women's rugby team.
Congratulations on your accomplishments, Gillian! All of your volunteer work with Christmas baskets, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, and your church's children's program is also invaluable. |
