Evelyn Bowman - December 23, 2004
Evelyn Bowman a grade 11 student at Pauline Johnson Collegiate is this week's Athlete of the Week. This 16-year-old student has been participating in her favourite sport basketball for the past eight years, involved with Briers, CYO and Haldimand County teams. In 2002, Evelyn received the Southwood MVP award for her participation in a junior girls basketball tournament, and has been on travelling teams for both the Haldimand and Brantford Briers teams for the past five years.
Evelyn also enjoys playing rugby and has been involved with the Brantford Harlequins Rugby squad for two years and helped her team finish in first place in their division. She also played for the Niagara Rugby Union when they competed in the Ontario Summer Games, finishing in 3rd place.
This adventurous teen has developed a love of Ultimate Frisbee in the past year, and plays whenever she can.
Evelyn has been helping score keep for two years, is involved with her school's athletic council and is always on-hand to assist any team who needs pointers on how to improve their game. She is currently working with the special education class at her school with a placement through her leadership class, and is heavily involved with a variety of school events and activities.
Volunteering is another one of Evelyn's passions, and has helped out with the 'Light up the Night' in Caledonia, the Caledonia Fair, the Pauline Johnson reunion and graduation committees, and the Paris to Ancaster bike race.
Amazingly, Evelyn still finds time to maintain an 81 per cent average, and hopes to attend the University of Victoria in the future and become a teacher in special education, English or physical education. She would also like to continue playing basketball and rugby in university, and would love the opportunity to take her sports to a professional level if the opportunity should arise.
Evelyn is very grateful for the support and guidance of many people who have helped her achieve her personal goals; her parents, family, teachers, coaches and friends. Her positive and mature attitude towards life in general is what truly makes her a star.
Congratulations Evelyn, and good luck! |
