Drew Birka - September 25, 2003
The Tournament Capital of Ontario "Athlete of the Week" is Drew Birka, an 18-year-old graduate of Assumption College currently attending the University of Western Ontario.
The recipient of many scholarships, sports-related awards, and academic merits, Drew has played hard and studied hard. His involvement in basketball was both at the high school level and with the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO). A player on the junior and senior team at Assumption College, he was three-time MVP, three-time co-captain, four-time all star, four-time CWOSSA winner, and twice participant at OFFSA.
With CYO basketball, he was a player, a captain, a referee, a coaching assistant, and a head coach of the midget A team. This demonstrates Drew's dedication to developing athletic skill, and a desire to make a difference by being a leader and a role model.
Volleyball is also of great interest to Drew. He played throughout high school, achieving the title of MVP four times. He acted as co-captain on the senior team at Assumption during the 2001/2002, and 2002/2003 seasons, helped the team become city champions and CWOSSA participants.
Drew also participated in the following sports at high school with dedication and perseverance: badminton (MVP); tennis (twice MVP, city silver medalist in singles and mixed doubles); track and field (MVP, four-time CWOSSA participant, and twice awarded Athlete of the Year); rugby and golf.
At the community level, this outstanding athlete has also been involved in skiing, snowboarding, squash, soccer, baseball, karate, and scuba diving.
It is truly remarkable that Drew has also been able to dedicate himself to homework and receive the academic award every year of high school. His latest scholastic accomplishments showcase his hard work and dedication.
During the 2002/2003 school year alone, Drew was the national semi-finalist for the Wendy's Classic Achievers scholarship; he was awarded the Bison's Athletic/Academic scholarship, the Mancuso scholarship, the Kiwanis scholarship, and an academic scholarship from the University of Western Ontario. Drew hopes to apply the degree in Kinesiology he is currently pursuing to become a chiropractor or a physiotherapist. |
