Deidra McDermid - August 25, 2005
Deidra McDermid is entering grade seven at Resurrection School and has been actively involved in organized sports for many years. Deidra has played basketball in the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) for seven years and played on CYO rep teams for four years. She was a member of two 'AAA' provincial championship teams, including this past year when they won seven of the eight tournaments they entered, finishing the season with a 44-1 record.
For the past three years, Deidra and her three team mates have participated in the Gus Macker 3 on 3 basketball tournament in London, where they earned two first place finishes and a second place finish. She has attended the Mohawk basketball camp with Mike Smrek, the North Park Basketball Camp, and the James Naismith Basketball Camp in Huntsville.
Deidra has also been an active participant in soccer for many years. She has played on a select team for the last two years and this year is a member of the Brantford under 12 year old rep soccer team.
Deidra is a member of the Brantford Gymnastics Academy where she competes at the Advanced Recreational level in the vault, uneven bars, beam and floor. She has won the overall gold medal at three invitational gymnastics meets including two at the Brantford Gymnastics Academy and one at the Markham Invitational Gymnastics Meet. Deidra also received awards for 'the Most Dynamic Vault' and for 'the Highest Dismount on the Beam'.
As a student at Resurrection School, Deidra qualified to participate in the County Cross Country meet and the County Track and Field meet for the past 3 years. At the Cross Country meet this year she placed second in a field of over 130 runners in the 1.8 km run. Deidra also competed at the County Track and Field meet this year and placed first in triple jump, second in the 200m and third overall in the Junior Girls' division.
Deidra has played Flag football for the past 4 years and in two of these years, she helped her team earn the Overall League Championship and was awarded the Most Improved Player award. In all of her athletics, Deidra is known for her sheer speed, her quickness and the constant smile on her face.
Deidra is also actively involved in many extra-curricular activities at her school. This past year, she was the Lieutenant Captain of the Safety Patrol squad and was thrilled to be chosen to represent her school at a Patrol Camp in Oshawa. This coming school year, Deidra will be the school's Safety Patrol Captain.
Deidra has been very successful in school oratorical competitions. For the past two consecutive years, she has won her school competition and went on to compete at the Board, Local Branch Legion and Legion Zone levels. This year, Deidra won the Zone Level Public Speaking competition and came second at the Local Branch Level.
In May, Deidra was one of four students chosen to represent her school to compete in the Skills Canada Competition for character animation at RIM Park in Waterloo. Deidra and her teammates earned a third place finish at this competition.
Deidra was humbled to twice be chosen the recipient of the Christian Living Award at Resurrection School, selected by her peers. Deidra has always maintained an overall A average has received many academic accolades, including winning a creative writing competition which entitled her to attend a week long book camp sponsored by Laurier University.
Deidra and her family would sincerely like to thank all of her coaches and teachers who have provided her with these many opportunities. Their expertise and guidance have been invaluable in developing her skills and in helping her create memories of a lifetime. Thank you to all.
