Dana Steckle - March 18, 2004
This week's TCO "Athlete of the Week" is Dana Steckle, a 17-year-old grade 12 student attending Pauline Johnson Collegiate. Dana has achieved many personal goals over the past few years. She received an MVP award for junior girls basketball in 2000 and 2001; MVP for junior girls volleyball in 2001; junior track team MVP in 2001, and the Junior Athlete of the Year in 2001.
Dana also won the county track championship in the 80m. in 2001 and the 300m. hurdles in 2000 and 2001. She was a member of the senior girls volleyball city championship team in 2003 and is team captain of both the senior girls volleyball team and the senior girls basketball team this year. In 2001 and 2003 she received both her junior and senior school letters.
She also participated in Briers basketball on a select team for six years, CYO basketball select team for one year and in softball for four years. Dana's school life is also very busy, she has been a member of the PJ Athletic council for two years, a member of the student's council for 3 years and this year is the Minister of Sports.
She is the founder of the PJ intramural baseball league, she won the PJ spotlight award in 2004 and is currently co-coach of the PJ midget girls basketball team.
Dana still finds time to volunteer in the community by participating in the Briers basketball house league program as a referee, and for the past two years has been involved at the Participation House Haunted Hay Ride.
She has been on the honor roll since grade 9 and this fall hopes to attend Mohawk College in Hamilton to pursue a career in an architectural technology program and play varsity basketball or baseball.
