Cory Currie - March 2, 2006
Cory Currie is a talented cross-country athlete who began running the 800 and 1500-meter races at a young age and through his determination and hard work has become a world-class competitor. Events he has competed in are the 2000m and 3000m steeplechase, the 1500m, 3000m, 5000m, 6000m, and 8000m races.
Over the years Cory has received numerous awards including the Brantford Track and Field Athlete of the Year in 2003 and 2004, Brant County Senior Boys Cross Country Track Champion in 2003 and 2004, CWOSSA Senior Boys Track Champion in 2003 and 2004, Western Ontario 3000m Champion in 2003 and 2004, High School Champion at the Chicago University race in 2003 and 2005, 5th at the 2003 Ontario Club Cross Country Championships, 3rd at the 2003 Legion Nationals in the 3000m, the 2004 Brantford Track and Field Most Dedicated runner, 5th at the 2004 Junior Nationals in the 5000m, 2nd at the 2005 Ontario Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships, 5th at the 2005 Ontario Club Cross Country Championships, 4th at the 2005 Junior Nationals, and is currently training to compete in Japan at the World Cross Country meet.
Cory is a grade 12 student at BCI (Brantford Collegiate Institute) and excels both academically and athletically. Cory is enrolled in an elite athletes program at BCI and will receive a credit for training and performing in high-level competitions. While at BCI Cory has also received a number of awards including the Kevin Hignell Track and Field Award in grades 9, 10 and 11 and the top male cross-country runner in grades 9, 10 and 11.
Cory enjoys volunteering and has accepted the role of vice chair for the Canada Day Road Race event that will give him the opportunity to utilize his knowledge of running and help put on a successful event. He also enjoys helping young runners sharpen their skills at the Brantford Track and Field Club where he trains.
One of Cory's goals for the future is to receive an athletic scholarship from a university in the United States and he has already received several letters of interest from Harvard, Kentucky, Syracuse and Tulsa Oklahoma. He would also like to represent Canada again at a World Championships and one day represent his country at the Olympics.
Cory appreciates the guidance that he has received from his coaches over the years and would like to thank Ron Beck, Gord Beardwood, Dave Giancola and Scott Johnson. He is very grateful for the support of his family and friends who have been there throughout his career.
Cory's sports hero is Kevin Sullivan who continually inspires him to work hard so that one day he can achieve his dreams.
