Chris Cox - October 14, 2004
This week the TCO salutes Chris Cox as the Athlete of the Week.
This past summer local teen Chris Cox had the opportunity to pitch from the mound of the Toronto Skydome. This memorable event was one of several career highlights experienced by Chris, who has already had communications with scouts from various professional baseball teams and universities.
A grade 11 student at St. John's College, 16 year-old Chris is a right-handed pitcher for Team Ontario in the Senior Division. Chris began playing his sport of choice with the Brantford and St. George Minor Baseball Leagues. He also spent five years as a member of the Brantford Red Sox Triple "A" squad, and was chosen MVP for the team, which won two Ontario championships during his time on their roster.
As a member of Team Ontario, Chris travels extensively throughout Canada and the United States. He played in the National Amateur Baseball Federation World Series in Michigan this past summer, and has also competed in New York, Atlanta, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, and several other cities. When he is not playing in tournaments, Chris trains every weekend with his team, either in Waterloo or Toronto.
At school Chris has played for the SJC Green Eagles' Junior Basketball, Junior Volleyball and Senior Volleyball teams. He won the Most Valuable Player Award when he was a member of the Junior Volleyball team. This year he is one of three students coaching the Junior Boys Volleyball team. He has also coached peewee basketball for the Catholic Youth Organization league, and was an umpire for St. George Minor Baseball.
Chris maintains an Honours-level average in his academics, and enjoys recreational golf, mountain biking and soccer. His dream is to pursue a career in professional baseball. After high school he would like to earn a post-secondary scholarship to an American university, where he would continue to play baseball while studying toward a degree in kinesiology, graphics, or architectural design.
Chris said he is grateful to all the sponsors, teachers and coaches who have supported his efforts over the years. Updates on Chris' career can be seen on the internet at www.teamontariobaseball.com.
Congratulations Chris, and good luck! |
