Carl Stahlbrand - November 20, 2003
The Tournament Capital of Ontario "Athlete of the Week" is Carl Stahlbrand, a 15-year-old Grade 10 student at Brantford Collegiate Institute (B.C.I.) who has a passion for sports.
Carl's highest athletic accomplishments come from badminton. Just recently he won the 'triple crown' - gold medals in singles, doubles and mixed under 16 - at a second in Ontario in each of the three areas (singles, doubles, mixed), and may have the luck and ability necessary to garner him funded participation at the 2004 Pan Am junior games in Peru.
Saj Malik is currently coaching Carl at the Woodstock Badminton Club. While a member of the Brantford Junior Badminton Club in 2002, he won two bronze medals at the nationals, and a gold medal at the provincials under coach Edith Hayman.
Carl's interest in sports does not end with badminton: he is currently on the B.C.I. football team; he placed fourth in a recent Brant County cross country race; he won gold for singles at a Brant junior tennis tournament in September; he has also received many soccer trophies playing select or intercity rep for the last six summers.
When he has the time, Carl also enjoys skiing, snowboarding, wrestling, rugby, and volleyball. Yet this active student was still able to achieve a 91 per cent grade average in Grade 9 and is currently in the Grade 10 Laurier program at B.C.I. Chess championships can be added to this mix, and several high school subject awards.
Congratulations Carl. |
