Athlete of the Week - 2006

    Brayden Dawson - March 16, 2006

Brayden Dawson is an energetic young athlete who is interested in many different sports but his favorites are hockey, soccer and running.

He has been playing hockey with Brantford Church for the past five years, is a goalie in the league and received the Scotia Bank Player of the Week award in 2005. Brayden also enjoys playing soccer and is going into his second season with Brantford Youth Soccer and Brantford Inter-City Soccer.

His main focus is long distance running and at the age of eleven he is already a well-established racer with a recognizable name in the running world. Brayden has been running for the past three years and trains with the Brantford Track and Field Club and is very successful at school and regional meets.

He won a gold medal in the Junior boys 800m and 1500m at the Brant County meet, he won silver at the indoor games at York University in the 1500m Atom boys division, he placed 3rd at the Willow Lake cross county invitational and 5th place at the Brant County meet in 2005. He placed 3rd at the Cambridge Mile, 4th at the Brantford Classic, 3rd at the Cambridge Classic, 4th at the London Summer Night 5k, and 1st at the London Spring Bank 5k. He ran the 2005 Runners Choice Runpiker series and in the following races placed first; New Hamburg Classic, Stratford Festival City Classic, Grand Bend 5k, St. Mary's River Run, and the Exeter Fun Run. His best 5k run was at Grand Bend, with a time of 21:09. Brayden is ranked as the fastest 5k boy for Ontario road racing.

Brayden is a grade 6 student at Mount Pleasant school and says his favorite class is Physical Education. He is very concerned about the underprivileged people in the world, so to help out his community Brayden and a friend took a sled and trudged through the snow to collect food and donations for the food bank. Brayden admires Terry Fox and says that someday he wants to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research, just like Terry.

Brayden is already planning for his future and hopes to become a research scientist or kinesiologist. He also wants to earn a scholarship to run at the Michigan State University or play soccer for a European team.

    Congratulations Brayden, and good luck!
