Brad Maunder - October 20, 2005
Brad Maunder is a 15-year-old, grade 10 student from Pauline Johnson Collegiate who is an exceptional AAA goalie and an excellent shortstop with the Brantford Heat. Over the last 11 years he has tried many sports including soccer, bowling, lacrosse, hockey, and fastball. Brad's love for hockey and fastball has taken him to the rep level, competing in both the United States and Canada.
Brad has been playing rep hockey with the Brantford 99ers for four seasons and is looking forward to getting back on the ice, for his 5th season with the major midget team. He won many championships and MVP awards during his time in house league, and in 2001, Brad's coaches inspired him to take hockey to a new level with the Brantford 99ers.
In the 2001/2002 season Brad adjusted well to the rep level where he had a great year earning shutouts and MVP awards. His next season was even better, with Brad playing on the A team and getting an amazing opportunity to play in Lake Placid with his team. Brad earned an assist and scored a goal in the semi-final game, helping his team get to the championship game.
Brad played AA in 2003/2004 and did exceptionally well throughout the season, helping his team win gold at the Wayne Gretzky International Tournament. He earned a shutout in the championship game and won the MVP award, and was then called up to play AAA last season. With several shutouts and an MVP award, Brad helped his team win the Alliance League Championship.
Besides hockey, Brad has been playing in the Brantford Minor Softball Association for several years, starting off in their house league program in 1995, winning many championships and several MVP awards. Since then he went on to the rep level and is currently competing against other cities and provinces.
This past season Brad played for the Brantford Heat and contributed to a gold medal finish in the 'B' provincials. His teammates elected him to represent Brantford in the All-Star game held in Kitchener. Brad won several MVP awards during the season, including a Golden Glove competition and was voted to play on the All-Star team when he played for the Brantford Wildcats.
Brad participated in the qualifiers held in Orleans this past July with the Brantford Heat. Although they didn't qualify to play in the prestigious Canadian Eastern Championship in New Brunswick, Brad had an excellent performance and was chosen to represent Team Ontario by the Newmarket Stingers, who qualified to go to Fredericton. While in Fredericton Brad helped the Stingers place fourth overall.
Brad's goal for next season is to again play for Team Ontario and return to the Eastern Canadian Championships that will be held in Nova Scotia. Brad really appreciates the support and guidance of his coaches Al and Mark Staats, as well as all the other great coaches that have helped him along the way.
Brad also participates in sports at Pauline Johnson and was the only grade nine student on his school's ball team and only one of two grade nine boys on the hockey team. He contributed to them winning a championship title. Over the years, Brad has won over 80 awards, trophies and medals in hockey, track and field, soccer, chess, and ball - many were MVP awards.
Brad volunteers with the Woodman School floor hockey team and ball team. He's spent many Saturday mornings helping grade five students with their reading skills and is a goalie instructor helping a former coach with his Atom A 99ers team.
Brad's plans for the future include continuing his education, staying involved in both hockey and ball at a competitive level, and to one day represent Team Canada in the junior men's competition and travel the world participating in international tournaments.
Congratulations Brad, and good luck! |
