Benton Gibbons - April 6, 2006
Benton Gibbons is an energetic 16-year-old who has been involved in a variety of sports for several years. His sport of choice is football; he and both of his brothers have been involved in football for a number of years. In grade 9 Benton achieved his position as quarterback on the BCI junior football team and immediately jumped into a leadership role. In 2004 he helped his team win the city championships and in 2005 he again lead his team to the finals.
Benton was awarded the Most Valuable Player in his final year as a Colt, for his hard work and dedication. He has attended a number of camps to increase his skills including the McMaster Marauders training camp and the Test To Be The Best NFL/CFL high school prospects program held in Hamilton.
Basketball is another sport that Benton has enjoyed playing for a number of years. He joined the Briers basketball program at the age of five; he played at Agnes Hodge elementary school and at Ryerson Middle School. When he started high school he was asked to skip midget basketball and step right into the junior program. Benton helped his high school team make it to the semi-finals in BCSSA and to the finals at CWOSSA.
Benton also excelled in hockey starting when he was only four. He helped his teams win numerous championships and was awarded the Most Valuable Player award in 2001 with the Christian boys hockey league.
In 2005 Benton began his rugby career with the BCI Broncos, he was team captain and received the Most Valuable Player award. He is currently playing for the BCI junior Colts rugby squad.
Benton is a grade 10 student at Brantford Collegiate Institute and says he loves school and enjoys going everyday. He maintains passing grades in all of his classes.
In the future Benton plans to attend university or college and play either football or basketball. He also plans to continue his education and become a geography teacher.
Benton would like to thank all of his coaches and teachers for the recognition and opportunity they have given him as an athlete and student. He also wants to thank his family, especially his father, who has taught him to love every sport he plays.
