Angela Quick - April 29, 2004
This week's TCO "Athlete of the Week" is Angela Quick, a 14-year-old Grade 9 student at Paris District High School.
Angela is a triathlete with an excellent placing in the provincial rankings: she was 5th overall in Ontario in the 14 to 15 age group for the Ontario Association of Triathletes (OAT) Kids of Steel (KOS) series in 2003, with many top-five finishes during the season. Angela placed fourth overall in Ontario in 2002 in the 12-13 age division and fifth overall in 2001 for the same age division.
Angela also competed at the Eastern Canadian KOS triathlon championships in 2003, placing 11th in the girls 14-15 age group, posting the fastest run time at the Magog Quebec race.
This outstanding athlete has been a member of the Brantford Track and Field Club (BT&FC) for four years, beginning her track and field career in Grade 4 at her elementary school, St George German School. She was an integral member of the pennant-winning team every year. In 2003, Angela was the Brant County midget girls' cross country champion. She then moved up to junior to compete at CWOSSA and placed 7th in her race. Her team placed second, earning them the opportunity to go to OFSSA.
This year's track season began well - a second place finish in the midget girls 1500-metre at the Hamilton Spectator indoor track and field meet in February. Angela has also been chosen to compete for Brantford in track and field at the Children's International Games in Cleveland, Ohio in July 2004.
As Angela enjoys running road races, she has competed in the Brantford Classic every year since she was six years old. She was the second overall female in the 5km distance in 2002 and 2003. Her personal best at a race was a 5km time of 19:46 in Burlington on Easter weekend 2004.
Angela received the George Churchill Award for outstanding Ontario Track and Field Association athlete from the BT&FC in 2003 in the under-15 age category. She was also awarded the Mannen Trophy for outstanding road runner in 2002 and 2003.
Angela's involvement in sports also includes swimming and badminton. She has been a member of the Brantford Aquatic Club (BAC) since the age of six, currently swimming seven days a week as a member of the competitive team. She is also a member of her high school's junior badminton team.
As a program assistant for the South Dumfries Figure Skating Club for the past four years, Angela continues to show her versatility and love of sports. She also spends time coaching swim school at the BAC.
She dreams of competing in an ironman triathlon and running the Boston Marathon.
Congratulations Angela and the best of luck! |
