Andrea Simpson - June 30, 2004
This week's TCO "Athlete of the Week" is Andrea Simpson, a 14-year-old student who recently graduated from Grade 8 at Bethel Elementary School, and who will be attending Grade 9 at Paris District High School.
Andrea loves to play a variety of sports but her main involvement has been playing hockey with the Brantford Ice Cats for the past five years. She has also been playing baseball with a rep travel team, the Paris Predators, for the past two seasons.
At school, Andrea was on the co-ed badminton team, the soccer team, the volleyball team, and track and field. She has been tremendously successful with track and field: this year, she came in first place for the girls 1500m, girls 400m, first in shot put, first in long jump, and second in girls 100m.
She went on to represent her school at the regional meet where she brought home two silvers for the 400m and the 1500m. Andrea was voted "most athletic female" in her Grade 8 newsletter.
Andrea became involved in sports at a very early age. She began figure skating at the age of three, T-ball at 4-years-old, and danced for two years, doing jazz, tap and acro.
This energetic athlete is one of her baseball team's leading hitters this year. She is the youngest player on the team yet succeeds in keeping up with her teammates by stopping or catching most balls whether she is shortstop, third base, or in the field.
Andrea has a refreshing approach to playing sports: she is a serious competitor yet enjoys the game while not feeling defeated with a loss. She has made many friends through her involvement in sports and has a terrific attitude. A career as a physical education instructor may be in her future.
Congratulations Andrea! |
