Andrée Matte - June 24, 2004
This week's TCO "Athlete of the Week" is Andrée Matte, a 16-year-old Brantford resident attending Grade 11 at Georges-P.-Vanier in Hamilton.
Andree's main sport is power tumbling. She has been involved in it for the past two years, training at the Burlington BG's Club, before which she actively competed in gymnastics from 5 years old to 14 years old. She also joined cheerleading for the 2003-2004 season as a member of the Cheerforce Wolfpack Senior Large National team.
This athlete has definitely started off her tumbling career on the right foot by winning the 2003 Canadian Nationals in Saskatoon in the novice women category. Andrée won the Canada Cup in Calgary in April 2004 in the women senior elite category and also won age group championships in the 17+ category at the same competition. She is the winner of the 2004 Ontario provincials and advanced to the 2004 Canadian nationals where she won gold in the senior elite category.
As for cheerleading, Andrée has won numerous competitions during the past season in New York State, Pennsylvania, Oakville, and Mississauga. She helped her team finish second at the American Americheer nationals in Orlando, Florida in March, and finished in second at the Canadian nationals in Mississauga.
Andrée has also added to her name "most improved" at Cheerforce Wolfpack, and received the All Force award for good tumbling, good stunting, good dancing, good energy, and attitude.
Andrée will be representing Canada shortly at the Indo-Pacific Games in Kelowna, B.C. held from July 12 to 18. Immediately following that competition, she will fly to Tampa, Florida for the Pan-American Games where she will compete for Canada.
This outstanding athlete has played hockey for her school last season, has volunteered at gymnastics competitions held at the club to which she belongs, is on the honour roll at school, and has far too many gymnastics awards from her nine years of competition to list.
