Amanda Schmitke - July 20, 2006
Amanda Schmitke is a grade 12 student from Holy Trinity High School who excels in the sport of swimming. She trains with the Brantford Aquatic Club and has been swimming for the past 11 years.
Amanda is competitive swimmer who has won numerous championships and awards over the years. In 1998 she won the Age Group Achievement Award with the Portage Piranhas swim team, the 2000 Age Group Achievement Award with the Brock Niagara Aquatics swim team, she received the 2002/03 MVP Swim Award at her school, and in 2003 she was the NSSAA Swim Champion.
In 2004 Amanda was again the NSSAA Swim Champion, she received the 2004/05 MVP Swim Award, in 2005 she was the NSSAA Swim Champion and the CWOSSA Swim Champion.
Amanda was the 2005 OFSAA silver medalist in the 50-meter freestyle, the bronze medalist in the 100-metre freestyle and was awarded the 2005 Janet Steinberg Memorial Award from the Brantford Aquatic Club.
In 2006 she was the NSSAA Swim Champion, the CWOSSA Swim Champion, she won a gold medal for the 100-meter freestyle and a silver medal for the 200-meter freestyle at OFSSA.
Amanda also participated in cross-country for 7 years and track and field for 4 years. She won the 2002/2003 Cross-Country MVP Award, was the 2003 NSSAA Cross-Country Champion, and the 2004 NSSAA Cross-Country Champion.
Amanda enjoys volunteering at the Norfolk General hospital, the Simcoe Humane Society and with the March of Dimes and Alzheimer Society's events.
She is an excellent student who has worked hard to maintain an 84% average for her entire high school career. She will be attending Guelph University next year to become a veterinarian.
Amanda's athletic goal for the future is to participate at senior nationals in swimming this year, and represent Canada at the 2008 or 2012 Olympics.
