Alison Smith - May 30, 2002
The Tournament Capital of Ontario "Athlete of the Week" is Alison Smith a sixteen year old, grade 10 student from Burford District High School who is a member of the Burford Figure Skating Club, the Brant Figure Skating Club and the Three Seasons Skating Club.
Alison recently passed here Jr. competitive test and won 1st place in the junior ladies long program at an invitational competition last February. She also achieved her gold skills, gold dance and gold freeskate. In 2000 Alison won the Verna Backus Award, at the Tri-County Inter-club, for volunteering and assisting others in the sport of skating.
One of Alison's greatest memories was being chosen as a flower retriever at the 1998 Canadian Figure Skating Championships where she participated in the opening and closing ceremonies and handed out medals to Elvis Stojko, Shae Lynn Bourne and Victor Kratz.
Alison is on the Burford athletic council, is a member of both the soccer and track & field teams, plays on the under 19 girls soccer team during the summer and won the 2001 Junior Athlete of the Year award.
