Abbey-Layne Ball - March 6, 2003
The Tournament Capital of Ontario "Athlete of the Week" is Abbey-Layne Ball an eighteen-year-old OAC student from Pauline Johnson Collegiate who participates and excels in several sports. Abbey is captain of the PJ Thunderbirds Sr. volleyball team and captain of the Brant Youth volleyball team in the OVA.
She won the Jr. Athlete of the Year in 2000, won MVP for both volleyball and basketball in 2000 was voted MVP for the Brant Youth Volleyball club in 2001 and her high school team won the Brant County volleyball championships again this year.
Abbey has been competing in track and field since 2000 and has competed at OFSAA in the 4x100 relay, at CWOSSA in the 4x100 relay winning the Championships, and at the Brant County Championships in the 4x100 relay, 300m hurdles, 80m hurdles, and 400m sprints. She is also captain of her high school basketball team and plays soccer.
Abbey was involved in tap, jazz and ballet for several years and won many awards including a dance scholarship. She enjoys helping her community through volunteering and has been involved with many groups over the years including the Heart & Stroke Foundation, the Greening of Brant, the Tree for Life Campaign, and the D.A.R.E. program. She is also involved at school as a home room representative, is on the Athletic Council, Grad Committee, Prom Committee, is a SIGMA member and helps referee hockey and volleyball games.
Abbey has been on the honor roll since grade 9 and last year achieved a 90.5% average. Her goal is to further her education in the field of science next fall and one day become a pharmacist. She also wants to play at the elite level on a University volleyball team.
