3rd annual Walter Gretzky Street Hockey Tournament – another HUGE success!
The 3rd annual Walter Gretzky Street Hockey Tournament was hosted from June 5 to 7. Walter Gretzky was on hand to welcome players and visitors to Brantford for a weekend of FUN and sports.
Ninety-four teams in youth and adult divisions played in the 3-day event. Participants traveled from England, New Zealand, Los Angeles, New York, Calgary, Quebec, Toronto, Brantford and several other cities in the US and Canada.
Congratulations to all the gold medal winners in the following divisions; Brantford Lions - 7 to 9; Brantford Lions -10 to 12; Brantford Lions - 13 to 15; St. Catharines BHI Explosion -Teen; Panthers - Men’s Rec. 1; Premature Shooters - Men’s Rec. 2; Dip City Danglers - Men’s Rec. 3; The Raiders - Men’s Rec. 4; The Blasts - Men’s Intermediate; St. Catharines BHI Explosion - Men’s Competitive.
A big thank you to Kevin Smith an international film producer, director, screenwriter, and actor from Los Angeles who came to Brantford to participate in this year’s tournament and was involved in an Exhibition Game on the final day of the tournament to help raise funds for Brantford’s Sports Facilities Infrastructure Legacy Fund.
Thanks to Dean Blundell a well know radio personality from Toronto who helped promote the tournament on his radio show and competed against Kevin’s team along with members from the only girls team in the tournament. After the game Kevin announced he would be donating $10,000 to the Sports Legacy Fund from the proceeds of his sold out show held the night before at Brantford’s Sanderson Centre for the Performing Arts.
Walter Gretzky officially opens the 3rd annual Walter Gretzky Street Hockey Tournament. He is joined by celebrity guests Kevin Smith and Dean Blundell, local dignitaries and committee volunteers.
A special thank you to Brantford’s Lord Mayor and our greatest ambassador Walter Gretzky for his endless enthusiasm, kind spirit and generosity throughout the tournament signing countless autographs and taking pictures with young and old, we couldn’t have done it without him.
